Estate, Succession and Retirement Planning, like many other issues today, has its own set of jargon that can be difficult for people to understand. Additionally, farmers and businesses face some unique problems related to estate planning that other wage earners do not. Missouri's "Your Farm, Your Business Your Future" curriculum is designed to provide basic estate, succession and retirement planning concepts. It walks participants through the requirements and implications of various pathways for the use of their long-term accumulated assets. And the class helps participants discuss their needs with financial and legal professional help without getting the feeling "they were completely over our heads and we didn't understand what they were saying".
This course is designed to be taught as a 4 session, 3 hour each session program or a total of 12 hours of instruction. Topics that are covered in this program include: property ownership in Missouri, business structure, choosing your advisers, probate in Missouri, federal and state estate tax issues, wills, trusts, non-probate transfers, federal and state estate tax issues, special estate tax provisions, long-term care concerns, and the importance of family communication.
The class is held on Tuesday evenings at the Butler Public Library (south-side conference room), 100 W. Atkison, Butler, MO. 64730. Participants can contact the Bates County Extension Office to sign up. Bates County Extension is in the southeast corner of the Bates County Courthouse basement, 1 N. Delaware, Butler, MO 64730.
