Springfield's Taylor Park Creates Antique Photo Startup
Are you the family historian who ends up with all the family photos, from tintypes to the latest baptismal pictures? Do you wonder what to do with those pictures or what will happen to them?
Taylor Park of Springfield, Missouri was working for a successor trustee in California when given the task of scanning a family’s photo collection. The original plan was to create a DVD, but Taylor chose to upload them on a hosting site where the family could access them from anywhere. The family loved the ease and versatility of this arrangement, while the attorney appreciated the cost savings and simplicity. Motivated by the results, Taylor tested the idea on his family. “I scanned 8,541 photos and shared the files with family members,” explains Taylor. “My goal was to remove the overwhelming burden of what to do with these photos and to ensure the family history doesn’t stop or isn’t forgotten.” Family Photo Vault was launched January 2017.
Taylor’s enthusiasm for the business keeps him going when he encounters complications. “I don’t have enough hours in the day to fully tackle everything properly; from creating an online presence to actively scanning photos. It’s a tricky balancing act.” With the help from the E Factory, 1 Million Cups and plenty of networking, he’s pushing past the obstacles.
While cash flow issues are a concern for most startups, Taylor admits it’s frightening to run a business from a dwindling savings account, however, moving back to Missouri has helped stretch his money further. “The best part is visiting clients and listening to their family history while preserving their pictures. It’s satisfying to know I am helping them ease this burden.”
As he builds his clientele and develops an infrastructure, Taylor advises, “Be aware that your planned launch date and first dollar is further down the road than you think. During that time, keep learning while your problems are still small and continue to network.”
