PawFriction: Improving Quality of Life through Mobility for Senior Dogs
Just as advances in health, nutrition and medical care are allowing people to live longer healthier lives, our pets are living longer, also. Stacey Bone, a veterinarian from Branson, Missouri, noticed an issue developing during his first year of practice in Las Vegas. “Most floor surfaces weren’t carpeted and animals frequently suffered from slipping and sliding injuries,” explains Stacey. “With mobility injuries increasing for aging dogs and pets, owners were asking for solutions.”
Stacey researched his idea for seven years, comparing mobility issues and solutions for humans to that of dogs and elderly animals. He knew a solution was ‘out there’, but his biggest obstacle was believing in it. “I let others convince me it couldn’t be done.”
Then in 2014, a client introduced Stacey to Jeff Harms, an engineer in St. Louis. Soon, the team worked together to build their product. PawFriction was launched August 1, 2015, and became a branch of Pawtology, a company devoted to the care of senior pets.
Once the idea was launched, the design issues dog-piled on: finding non-toxic substrates and simplifying paw application and removal while improving product duration. “Jeff and I make an effective team and we accomplish a lot together.” With additional connections from the Startup Connection and a contract with JSI, a company that employs adults with disabilities, PawFriction has pushed past obstacles and are pleased with their progress. “Happy pet owners and before-and-after videos are the best rewards.” Knowing they have filled a void and have received validation from Purina is satisfying.
Through his own experience, Stacey advises, “Don’t get in your own way or let others talk you out of something good. Find advisors and mentors and ask for help.”
The PawFriction team will continue to develop their product and introduce other products to improve the health and quality of life for senior animals.
