Ignoring the Naysayers for the Sake of Prevention
Football. Boxing. Car accidents. Military. What do these have in common? These are only a few situations that lead to concussions. “According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one percent of the population will suffer a concussion or traumatic brain injury every year,” states Chiming Huang, a neurobiologist from Kansas City and founder of SuedoSkull. “Concussions have severe and long-term consequences and it is far better to prevent them rather than attempting to fix the brain after an injury.”
By studying how impact forces can cause concussions, Chiming and his team have built a prototype helmet that incorporates sensor technology with artificial intelligence. The sensor helps to identify impact events and dissipates that energy before it affects the brain. Those with personal concussion experience understand the need for prevention, but others are reluctant to accept that prevention is possible or that the technology exists.
Founded in 2013, Chiming is highly grateful to family for contributing funds, engineering and their support to SuedoSkull. His wife, Rosa, has been a constant support throughout his pursuit to prevent concussions.
Despite their struggles, Chiming is pleased he has proven the naysayers wrong. “The tech behind our prototype has been a great challenge, but we have met the challenge head on. We are further developing our product to offer intelligent and personalized protection, fitting an individual like personalized medicine; very important to protecting children.”
Although Chiming is uncomfortable offering advice, he admits he enjoys being an underdog. “If you are feeling down or beaten up by circumstances, you tend to lose faith in the system and yourself. If you keep doing the right thing, good things will happen.” He also advises entrepreneurs to expect being an underdog. “Overcoming a challenge is an amazing feeling and people love underdogs.”
As the SuedoSkull team continues to pursue their goals, they invite readers to become involved in their Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.
