Solopreneur Grows to Small Business Owner
Steve Mirowski’s entrepreneurial spirit began as a teen, building his own landscaping business. He financed his education by selling his business, only to discover he wasn’t content with the lack of physical and mental stimulation at his corporate job. Through his need to be outdoors and the joy he experienced remodeling his 100 year old house, he sought out an alternative career as a home inspector. “I was energized by the challenge of each inspection and letting the house tell the story.”
Aware that lack of capital was the reason many businesses failed, Steve and his wife, Dana, chose to live off her income for one year before taking the entrepreneurial leap. “By the time we got started, I had one year’s income saved up. It was slow, but it was conservative and comforting, with minimal risk.”
During this time, he became a member of the American Association of Home Inspectors, enrolled in school, attended conferences and dedicated himself to self-training, all while welcoming a newborn baby. Mirowski Inspections operated for six years out of state but then the family moved to Springfield, Missouri. “I was established and successful in Wisconsin, but none of that mattered here. I had to start over.” It was a challenging year to reestablish himself, but Steve pushed through it and has experienced exciting growth in the last three years. “We moved from a basement office to office space in downtown Springfield, and have grown to 12 employees over the years.”
Looking back, Steve never anticipated hiring employees. “I went into business to create a job I enjoyed. I learned the only way to achieve my life goals was to have employees, which led to improved work/life balance. The unexpected bonus was building a business that can operate on its own.”
The Mirowski Inspection team is making plans to expand into other cities and excited to be well-known within their community.
